Dr Bettina Taylor’s presentation discussed medical malpractice insurance in depth. Her presentation explained that medical malpractice insurance is a type of insurance designed to protect practitioners against liabilities arising from professional services rendered; such as accusations of clinical errors or omissions. In South Africa, doctors are not mandated to hold this type of insurance, but private hospitals increasingly require proof of cover prior to granting admission rights to individual practitioners. It is crucial for doctors to understand how accusations and/or findings of negligent conduct can impact them and their practices, and to read their policies carefully to ensure that their needs are met and to avoid unpleasant surprises down the line. Only registered financial service providers can offer medical malpractice insurance, and the terms and conditions, including the premium, are clearly defined in the contract of insurance. This lively debate highlighted the importance of collaboration between medical professionals and medicolegal insurers.
