Dr Hlombe Makuluma, EthiQal’s Medico Legal advisor, joined the panel discussion at the recent ISAPS (International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) Course.
The panel discussion covered a wide range of ethical and legal issues pertaining to Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. The discussion emphasised the need to increase the risk-benefit analysis before surgery is performed, as the majority of procedures are non-medical or non-pathological in nature. A lively debate pertaining to the informed consent ensued with the advice on methods to evaluate patient’s understanding of risks before the procedure is undertaken taking into consideration language and cultural barriers.
